Programs & Activities
Group Activities
Our program is structured to give campers the opportunity to experience each activity at camp through a rotating group program. Camp KIPP DC offers a variety of activities, which may include:
Electives
Each afternoon, campers have a chance to “dive deep” into two activities via our electives program. Electives are afternoon activity periods in which campers participate for three consecutive days. For example, a camper may choose to participate in a basketball elective for three days. By doing so, campers have an opportunity to get hands-on, in-depth instruction from our basketball activity counselors over several days. As a result, by receiving deeper, individualized instruction, campers improve current skills and gain new skills. Camp KIPP DC offers a wide variety of electives to ensure that every camper gets to participate in an activity they love. All camp activities are co-ed and separated by age group except for elective blocks which are comprised of boys and girls from all age groups.
Discovery
At Camp KIPP DC, we provide opportunities for campers to develop their whole selves. Each day, our campers take part in our Discovery program, which includes a variety of activities that help campers develop their social and emotional skills. These activity blocks are based on the value of the day and help our campers expand their minds, their hearts, and their emotional intelligence.
Typical Daily Schedule
Each camp day is unique, but there is a good deal of regularity to the daily program. Below is an overview of a typical day:
Following wake-up and breakfast, the camp comes together for Sunrise. At Sunrise, we do cheers, introduce the value of the day, make announcements, review the schedule, and get excited for the day ahead!
After Sunrise, each group goes to three morning activities, including Discovery. Discovery blocks are geared toward self-discovery through group activities and offers campers a chance to reflect on the value of the day and the experiences they are having.
Following morning activities, there is lunch and "rest hour" or quiet time to relax, read, and spend free time together.
After rest hour comes a fourth group activity, followed by Electives. Electives are activity periods that allow campers to focus a single activity over three days and develop their skill set in that area.
After Electives, there is a brief wash-up and free period, followed by dinner.
After dinner, the whole camp comes together for Sunset, which includes a nightly awards ceremony, during which we recognize campers for their outstanding contributions throughout the day.
Sunset is followed by an evening activity, which will range from talent shows and sports tournaments to games and campfires.
Each day closes with some free dorm time before lights out.
While this represents a brief portrait, there is far too much going on to describe on paper. There will be hikes and excursions, exciting all-camp events, and fun and engaging activities for campers and team members to enjoy!
Special Days
There are a few Special Days at Camp KIPP DC. On a Special Day there is a special program which takes the place of campers’ regular activities. Campers might go on out-of-camp trips to amusement and water parks, baseball games, and other scenic destinations near camp. Campers will just have to wait and see what these days entail!
